After a six-year hiatus, the beloved “Once Upon a River” program returns to St. Croix Falls on April 6, 2025, bigger and more inspiring than ever! Pianist and composer Dan Chouinard originally produced “Once Upon a River” 15 years ago as an Earth Day tribute. It was so popular; it was performed every year for a decade along with a wide range of performers. This cherished event brings together renowned musicians, storytellers, and conservationists to celebrate the natural beauty and rich cultural heritage of the St. Croix River through music and spoken word.
Join us for an unforgettable afternoon featuring acclaimed performers with deep roots in the watershed. The concert marks the launch of Earth Day month celebrations throughout the St. Croix watershed. Come early and visit exhibits created by community conservation partners. With her multi-octave voice, 12 string guitar and mountain dulcimer, she weaves together song, story and spoken word in a one-of-a-kind presentation that will fill your heart and refresh your soul. After more than 50 years of writing and performing, she is as strong as ever, sharing her wonder and amazement at the world and all the creatures, including us, who inhabit it. Festival Theatre Black Box Join us for an intimate concert of original songs and poems by songstress Barbara McAfee. “Barbara McAfee is a one-woman burning man festival!"- Parker Palmer, author Barbara is a master voice coach, author, keynote speaker, and singer/songwriter who merges lessons from 12 years in organization development with the transformative power of sound. Her bestselling book, Full Voice, is based on her 25+ years as a voice coach, supporting people from many professions to find their voice, whatever that means to them. Since 2013 she has been certifying other Full Voice coaches to carry the sacred work of “midwifing voices” into full expression. Her approach shifts the way people think about and use their voices forever. Her TEDx talk on Full Voice has received over 100,000 views. Barbara has produced eight CDs of mostly original music and is founder of the Morning Star Singers, a volunteer hospice choir in the Twin Cities.
